The three routes — and what they do
Clothing can be shown three ways, each with its own strengths:
- Worn on the body: looks liveliest and shows the fit and drape. Usually sells fashion best, because buyers see how the piece looks on a person.
- Laid flat (flatlay): tidy, fast, good for details and patterns. Ideal when no model is at hand — shot from above on a flat, neutral surface.
- On a hanger or dress form: a compromise — shows the shape without a model, but looks less lively than worn.
Rule of thumb: worn for the main appeal, flatlay details to complement. If you don't want or can't do a worn shot, combine a hanger overview with detail flatlays.
Capturing the true color
The most common reason for disappointed buyers and returns: the color in the photo is off. So:
- Daylight instead of yellow artificial light — the latter distorts the color.
- No filters — they turn blue into teal and grey into beige.
- A neutral detail shot that shows the color as truly as possible, plus name the color in the text.
Honest colors are no disadvantage — they prevent trouble and look credible.
A clean look with your phone
- A calm background: a smooth wall, a neutral surface, a tidy room. No chaos, no distracting patterns (details on backgrounds in Make a background white).
- Iron/smooth: a wrinkled piece looks neglected — a quick smoothing makes a big difference.
- Straight and complete: the whole garment in frame, not cropped, camera level.
Showing flaws honestly
For second-hand fashion the same rule applies as for all sales photos: showing wear openly sells better. Pilling, a small stain, a worn spot, a missing button — in sharp close-up with an honest description. That builds trust, prevents disputes and returns, and attracts serious buyers. Hide flaws and you get them back at the complaint stage.
Format and completeness
Resale apps like Vinted show portrait tiles — so shoot vertically or crop to portrait, the piece filling the frame and centered. And use the allowed photos fully:
- Overall view (worn or flatlay)
- Back
- Material detail and pattern
- Label with size and material
- All flaws
The more complete the photos, the fewer follow-up questions — and the faster the sale. Before uploading, shrink and compress the images browser-local so the app loads quickly.
In short
- Worn sells best; complement with flatlay details.
- True color: daylight, no filters.
- Show flaws — honesty builds trust and cuts returns.
- Portrait format, full set of angles, then shrink.
