Two crops, one after another
Almost every platform does the same thing to your profile picture in two steps: first it crops it square (if you didn't upload a square), then it lays a round mask over it. Both steps cost image content — and both can be outsmarted if you plan for them in advance.
Problem 1: the head is cut off at the top
Cause: you upload a portrait photo, the platform crops automatically to 1:1, and its crop sits too low — the crown of the head falls away. The automatic crop can't know what matters to you. Fix: crop it yourself before uploading. In the crop tool, pick the 1:1 preset, center the face, and deliberately leave air above the head.
Problem 2: the corners disappear (round mask)
A square logo uploaded as a profile picture loses its four corners — because the round mask cuts away everything outside the circle. The mental trick: picture a circle inside your square; whatever lies outside is gone. Everything important — chin, hairline, logo edges, lettering — needs roughly 15% safety margin from the edge.
Problem 3: the subject is too small
A full-body photo as a profile picture leaves the head only a few pixels big — unrecognizable in the tiny profile display. Rule: crop tight. Head and shoulders, the face should fill about 60% of the image height. More detail is lost in the small display anyway.
The step-by-step solution
- Crop square (1:1 preset), subject centered, air above the head.
- Keep a 15% edge margin for anything that mustn't fall into the round mask.
- Crop tight enough that the face/logo fills the frame well.
- Upload at the recommended size (often 320–400 px or more), so nothing is upscaled.
- Check after upload — on phone and desktop, since the display size varies.
Special case: a logo as a profile picture
For brand logos, mind two things: first the round mask — square logos lose their corners, so better to use the symbol (without the wordmark) on a solid background with generous margin. Second the format: upload logos with hard edges as PNG, not JPG, or ghost edges appear. The details on a circle-safe logo profile picture are in The Instagram profile picture.
In short
- Square crop + round mask — plan for both.
- Crop 1:1 yourself, air above the head.
- 15% edge margin keeps content out of the mask.
- Crop tight, upload big enough, check on both devices.
