The misconception: designing at 90 pixels

Highlight covers are only shown as a tiny circle of about 90 pixels — but the reflex to create them at that size leads to mushy, upscaled icons. Instagram actually crops the cover from a story-format image (1080 × 1920 px), specifically from the central area. So you design large and centered, and the circle takes the middle.

Where the circle really sits

The key point: the round crop only captures a small, centered circle in the middle of the 1080 × 1920 image — not the whole image. It follows that:

  • Place the symbol centered, horizontally and vertically.
  • Keep it small — the icon should occupy only a fraction of the image height, with plenty of margin all around.
  • Nothing at the edge — everything outside the central circle disappears.

It's the same thinking error as with a cropped profile picture — the circle eats everything outside. Center the icon small and it lands exactly where the round mask looks.

Designing a cohesive set

The whole appeal of highlight covers lies in uniformity — they're the "menu bar" of your profile. For a tidy presence:

  1. Shared background: one color (matching the brand color) or a subtle texture — the same for all covers.
  2. Same icon size and position: every symbol the same size, the same centering.
  3. Same style: either all line icons, all filled, all with the same stroke weight — don't mix.
  4. Few colors: two or three, held consistently. A fixed color palette helps keep the look across all covers.

Preparing the canvas

In practice you set up a 1080 × 1920 area in your desired color, place the symbol centered, and export as JPG or PNG. If you want to use an existing image as a cover, bring it to 9:16 (1080 × 1920) first with the crop tool and center the subject — then the circle hits exactly what you want.

Setting covers without changing stories

A designed cover can be assigned anytime without touching the highlight's contents: open the highlight → "Edit Highlight" → "Edit Cover" → choose an image from the gallery. That way you can unify an existing profile retroactively — cover by cover, in one afternoon.

In short

  • Design at 1080 × 1920, not at 90 px.
  • Center the symbol small — the circle takes only the middle.
  • Uniform background, size, and style make the set.
  • Swap covers anytime without touching the stories.
