Frequently asked questions

A collection of the most common questions about JNRT Pixel — how it works, privacy, formats, license and ads. Missing one? Write to us.

General

What is JNRT Pixel?
JNRT Pixel is a free online toolbox for images. You can compress, convert, crop, resize, rotate, watermark or export JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF and SVG as PWA assets — all directly in your browser, no upload.
Does it cost anything?
No. JNRT Pixel is free and works without an account. Operation is funded by Google AdSense ads. If you want to work without ads, install the tool as a PWA or self-host the open-source variant locally.
Is there an API?
Not at the moment. The entire project is client-side — an API would mean uploading to a server, which is exactly what JNRT Pixel avoids on purpose. For batch workflows on the CLI we recommend sharp, imagemin or cwebp.

Privacy & security

Are my images uploaded?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser via the Canvas, WebCodecs and WebAssembly APIs. No server sees your images. Open the network tab in DevTools and verify it yourself — no requests are sent during compression.
What do you store about me?
Only what you decide: theme (dark/light), cookie consent and optionally a list of your recent actions — all in your browser's localStorage. There's no database, no tracking pixel at the image level. Details in the privacy policy.
What cookies are set?
By default: no cookies, only localStorage for your settings. Only when you enable advertising cookies or statistics in the cookie banner does Google Tag Manager or AdSense set the corresponding cookies. Before that, Consent Mode v2 with default "denied" applies — see §5a Privacy.
How can I withdraw my consent?
In the footer you'll find the "🍪 Cookie settings" link. You can change your selection there at any time or revoke it entirely.

Formats & quality

Which formats are supported?
Input: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, SVG, HEIC/HEIF. Output: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF (if your browser supports it) and SVG optimization. Animated GIFs are converted to animated WebP.
Do I lose quality when compressing?
For JPG, lossy WebP and AVIF: yes, that's the whole point of lossy formats. You control the amount via the quality slider (default 80). For PNG and lossless WebP: no — that's lossless. SVG is only structurally optimized (whitespace, unused defs), not its visible content.
Why is my WebP larger than the original JPG?
This happens when the original was already heavily compressed (e.g. a social-media photo at quality 50) and WebP is re-encoded at higher target quality. Try lower quality or check the "Multi-Format Compare" — JNRT Pixel shows the best format per image.
What is AVIF and when should I use it?
AVIF is the successor to WebP and often delivers 30–50% smaller files at the same quality. Browser support is excellent (all evergreen browsers since 2023). For photos on modern websites, AVIF is usually the best choice today. More in the AVIF blog post.

Usage & license

Can I use JNRT Pixel commercially?
Yes. Images you compress or convert with JNRT Pixel belong to you and can be used commercially without restriction. No usage rights are transferred to the provider.
Do I have to link to JNRT Pixel?
No, there is no attribution requirement. A voluntary "powered by JNRT Pixel" is appreciated but not necessary.
Is there an upload limit?
Since nothing is uploaded, there's no hard server limit. The only constraint is your device's memory. For very large files (over ~50 MP or ~50 MB) you may see loading delays on mobile browsers.
Which browsers are supported?
All modern evergreen browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Brave, Arc — version 90+ from 2021 onwards. Internet Explorer is not supported.

Ads & funding

Why do you run ads?
Hosting, domain and continuous development cost money. Non-personalized AdSense ads fund free operation without us collecting or selling user data.
Can I disable the ads?
Ad blockers are respected — we don't block adblock users. For permanently ad-free operation: install the tool as a PWA or host the open-source variant locally.
Do I see personalized or neutral ads?
By default, non-personalized ads without tracking cookies (parameter npa=1). You can explicitly allow personalized ads in the cookie banner — then Google AdSense serves personalized ads. The selection follows the IAB TCF v2.2 standard via the Google-certified CMP.
